Young Woman at an Easel, c. 1890. Henri Charles Guérard (French, 1846-1897), after Eva Gonzalès (French, 1849-1883). Aquatint with drypoint; image: 47.4 x 29.7 cm (18 11/16 x 11 11/16 in.). Although Henri Guérard was best known as a printer for the Impressionists, he was an accomplished original printmaker and experimented avidly with the materials and techniques of etching. This print is one of several that reinterpreted paintings by his wife, Eva Gonzalès, a painter who died at a young age in childbirth. In this print, Guérard etched a portrait that Gonzalès created of her sister, Jeanne, also an artist, working at an easel.

André Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri, photographer (French, 1819 - 1889) about 1865-1867 This photograph sits in an album that intermixes pages of cartes-de-visite with full-page photocollages. Victorian collagists took their photographic materials primarily from cartes-de-visite. Patented by André Adolphe Eugène Disdéri in 1854, the carte-de-visite was easily and inexpensively printed (84.XD.1157.2179). By the 1860s, _cartomania _ had taken hold. It became customary to exchange cartes-de-visite on social calls. These small studio portraits measure 3 ½ x 2 1/8 inches, about the size of a playing card. It is not known whether they removed the photographs from the thick cardstock on which they had been mounted or obtained unmounted prints from the photographer. People also collected cards of the royal family, actors, and politicians (see for example, the image of Princess Christina of the United Kingdom found in this album). Date: 1874.In 1874 Tennyson asked Cameron to make photographic illustrations for a new edition of his Idylls of the King, a recasting of the Arthurian legends. Responding that both knew that "it is immortality to me to be bound up with you," Cameron willingly accepted the assignment. Costuming family and friends, she made some 245 exposures to arrive at the handful she wanted for the book. Ultimately--and predictably--she was unhappy with the way her photographs looked reduced in scale and translated into wood engravings, and she chose to issue a deluxe edition, at her own risk, that included a dozen full size photographic prints in each of two volumes. Portrait of Nurse Nelly. Petronella Alida Goudkade, Nurse Nelly’, married the writer Ary Prins in 1894. Toorop may have made this portrait of her shortly before her wedding. Nelly worked as a parish nurse in a Hague hospital. Behind her is a vague fanciful pattern of birds. This type of portrait is one of the first of a long series that Toorop would continue to make in the following years.
