Below is a stem rising from a calix, having on top a blossom and curved branches with winged half-figures. Either one supports two stems which are above connected by arches forming a pavilion, with a putto sitting upon one of the points. Inside stands a figure, with raised right arm, leaning teh left hand upon an object standing beside, not clearly shown. The base is supported by the blossom. Usual background. Study for the Decoration of a Vault 1532-77 Orazio Samacchini Italian Samacchini worked briefly in Rome but primarily in his native Bologna and surrounding areas. In 1570 he secured the commission to paint the vault of the north transept of the cathedral in the nearby town of Parma. In this drawing, Samacchini's decorative scheme for the transept, a seated prophet of the old Old Testament and a pagan sibyl - both types generally understood to be harbingers of the coming of Christ - are depicted in each of the four corners of the vault, accompanied by putti. The iconography and style of this refined and polished design find their principal inspiration in Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Ceiling (1508-12), with its alternating monumental figures of sibyls and prophets in a variety of complicated poses. Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Decorated Sarcohpagus with Arabesques 1553 Anonymous This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound set of prints. Instead,
