Jan Lutma, goldsmith 1656 Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) Dutch The silversmith Johannes Lutma was a well-kown figure in Amsterdam society. He befriended many artists, including Rembrandt, who captured his likeness in this etching. The Frisian painter, who may or may not have been a pupil of Rembrandt, had painted a portrait of Lutma a few years earlier as well. In both portraits, Lutma is portrayed with the tools of his trade: hammer and chisels; and examples of the works he created. The engraving is based on a lively painting by Carpantiers (National Portrait Gallery, London and Yale Center for British Art), and versions of the model are preserved at the Victoria and Albert Museum and Folger Shakespeare, Library. In 1758, a related life-size marble was installed in David Garricks Temple to Shakespeare at Hampton on the Thames near Twickenham, later given to the British Museum, and is now installed at the British Library. Shakespeares pose is both thoughtful and dynamic, his sturdy desk indicates the lasting character of his writings, while the swirling cloak and arrested gesture convey creative genius.. A man wearing a mask drinking a cup of coffee (Le Masque au Caffé), title page to 'Divers Portraits' 1775 Giovanni David Italian Most of Giovanni David's etchings that were published by his Genoese patron in Venice are infused with the sophistication and theatricality that characterized the city's culture in the eighteenth century. This print is the frontispiece to a series of twelve prints, the 'Divers Portraits'. All of the types shown are characteristic of Venice and its environs. Inscribed with French poems on society's customs and morals drawn from the works of the French satirist Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux. Here, we see a masked reveler taking refreshment in one of the coffeehouses first introduced in the eighteenth century. The series is dedicated to Domenico Corvi, David's teacher in Rome.. Jan Lutma 1656 Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) Dutch Here, Rembrandt depicts Jan Lutma, a master silversmith in Amsterdam, with some of his creations: an object, possibly a candlestick, in his hand and a drinking bowl on the table. Lutma, about seventy-two years old in this portrait, experienced problems with his eyesight as he grew older, which may account for his absent look. Rembrandt printed this sensitive portrait on Japan paper, which imparts a warm tone to the background and heightens the shadows of the dimly lit room. To the upper left of the chair is the circular mark of the eighteenth-century British collector Sir Edward Astley, who occasionally placed his stamp in prominent places within images.
