This painting, titled "The Strawberry Girl," was exhibited at London's Royal Academy in 1773. It is by the English artist Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). Owing to his unfortunate habit of experimenting with pigments to discover the secrets of the Old Masters, whose canvases he would sometimes cut up for the purpose, his paintings lack permanence. Reynolds was perhaps the most popular portrait painter who ever lived. The world of fashion flocked to his studio. The Two Elder Children of Marie Antoinette - The First Dauphin (born 1781, died 1789) and the Madame Royale - at Versailles. Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun (1755-1842), also known as Madame Le Brun, was a French portrait painter, especially of women, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Her artistic style is generally considered part of the aftermath of Rococo with elements of an adopted Neoclassical style. She gained renown in particular for her self-portraits and depictions of courtly women, especially Queen Marie Antoinette.

A Boy with a CatMorning 1787 Thomas Gainsborough British Well-to-do art collectors of the eighteenth century enjoyed "fancy pictures" such as this, which provided an idealized and sentimental image of poor children. The model for this particular work, Jack Hill, was a local boy whom Gainsborough’s daughter considered adopting. Although the child’s vulnerable situation may prompt an emotional response, Gainsborough’s interest in this material appears to have been largely aesthetic. Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was the leading English portraitist of the 18th century. Through study of ancient and Italian Renaissance art, and of the work of Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck, he brought great variety and dignity to British portraiture.

Dorothea and Francesca 1898 New York. ìIt doesnít pay to paint everybody.î With this comment, Cecilia Beaux situated herself within the rarified group of successful late-19th-century portrait painters whose clientele was primarily the upper class. This full-length depiction of two of the daughters of Helena de Kay and Richard Watson Gilder is innovative in its portrayal of spontaneous movement. The Gilders were leaders of an artistic, literary, and musical circle in New York, and they were close friends of Beaux. The girls look down, rather than at the viewer, concentrating on their dance steps. The fluid brushstrokes and use of subtle color accurately convey motion and also give the appearance of a swiftly executed canvas; however, Beaux worked diligently on the picture for over two months.. Cottage Children (The Wood Gatherers) 1787 Thomas Gainsborough British This is one of what were called in the eighteenth century "fancy pictures," representing peasant children in rustic settings and inspired by the Spanish artist Murillo (1617-1682). The sentiment expressed in them was pleasing to Gainsborough's contemporaries, who seem not to have remarked in the sitters' hollow-eyed, wistful expressions an undercurrent of deprivation. Janet Halleck Drake 1825 Henry Inman American Janet Halleck Drake was the daughter of the New York poet Joseph Rodman Drake and named for her fathers friend, the poet Fritz Greene Halleck. She was about seven years old when she sat for Inman, who placed her in a fanciful woodland setting. Miss Drakes top hat is somewhat emblematic of the artist, who was known for wearing one about town. Inman exhibited the portrait in New York in 1825 and a reviewer found it “beautiful.”. The Laundress 1863? Honoré Daumier French This painting depicts a subject visible from Daumier’s studio on the quai d'Anjou in Paris: laundresses returning from laundry boats moored on the Seine. Despite the weight of her bulky load, the woman tenderly extends her hand to help a child up the steps of the embankment. With her sturdy form silhouetted against a bright background, the humble worker acquires a certain monumentality. This picture is the largest and possibly the last of three painted versions of the composition; Daumier’s pigments have deteriorated, obscuring the last digit of the date inscribed at the lower left, but in 1893 it was recorded as 1863..
