George Washington (1732-1799) served as the first president of the United States from 1789-1797. This portrait of him is unfinished and was painted in 1796 by the American artist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). Known as the Athenaeum Portrait, it now hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
