Burgomaster Jan van Duren (1613-1687). Artist: Gerard ter Borch the Younger (Dutch, Zwolle 1617-1681 Deventer). Dimensions: 32 1/16 x 25 13/16 in. (81.5 x 65.5 cm). Date: ca. 1666-67.Gerard ter Borch was one of the most compelling Dutch artists of the seventeenth century, recognized then as now for his handsome portraits and refined genre subjects. These splendid pendant portraits of Jan van Duren and his wife, Margaretha van Haexbergen (1975.1.141 and 1975.1.142), rank among the most important works by the artist in any American collection. Jan van Duren, a member of the elite ruling class of Deventer, poses in the rich attire of a prosperous regent, while his stately wife is no less suitably clad. Ter Borch presents his patrons in a setting devoid of detail: a simple velvet covered table and fringed velvet chair accompany the sitters. The restrained setting contrasts with and enhances Ter Borch's precisely painted subjects, dignified and ennobled by his sensitive brush. Museum: Metro

Date: 1532-33.These posthumous portraits of the Saxon electors Friedrich III, the Wise, and Johann I, the Constant belong to a series of sixty such portrait pairs, ordered by Johann I's son and successor, Johann Friedrich I, the Magnanimous, when he became elector in 1532. He intended the portraits of his father and uncle to serve as instruments of propaganda. The accompanying laudatory poems emphasize the passage of Saxon electoral preeminence from Friedrich to Johann, thereby implying the legitimacy of Johann Friedrich's own electorate. Completed in 1533, the extensive series demonstrates the speed and efficiency of which the Cranach workshop was capable. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The 76 year old Remonstrant minister, once the court chaplain of Prince Maurice, wears a calotte (skullcap) and a tabard, a fur-lined cloak - the kind of clothing elderly scholars preferred to be portrayed in. Wtenbgaerts fact is more realistically modelled than his hands, which may have been done by a pupil in Rembrandts workshop.

Portrait of Gerard de Lairesse 1665-67 Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) Dutch Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711) was, in his day, a well-known painter, etcher, and art theorist. He suffered from congenital syphilis, which caused him to go blind about 1690; he subsequently focused his energies on art theory. By the time this portrait was painted, in 1665, the ravaging effects of the disease were visible in his swollen features and bulbous nose. Recording his unfortunate appearance with an uncompromising directness, Rembrandt invested his subject with an air of quiet dignity. Although the sitter's theories on the ideal in painting were antithetical to Rembrandt's style, which Lairesse disparagingly likened to "liquid mud on the canvas," the portrayal is a sympathetic one. Oriental carpets more than two centuries old have rarely survived and are rarely represented in Islamic Art since Sunni Islam (and to a lesser extent Shia) eschews representational art in favour of precisely the repetetive geometric symbols and arabesques found, for example, in oriental carpets. This means that most examples of 17th century and earlier oriental carpets, mainly produced in Muslim lands, are only to be found in paintings from Christian lands where rich oriental carpets were associated with wealth, power and taste. Such carpets featured as an important decorative feature in paintings from the 14th century onwards, leading to the dichotomy that there are more depictions of oriental carpets produced before the 17th century in European paintings than there are actual oriental carpets surviving from the same period. Because of this European paintings have proved an invaluable source of reference for the study of the history of carpetmaking and carpets.
