The Portuguese originally based their administration in Kochi, or Cochin, in Kerala, but in 1510 moved to Goa. Until 1752, the State of India’ included all Portuguese possessions in the Indian Ocean, from southern Africa to Southeast Asia, governed by either a Viceroy or a Governor. In 1752 Mozambique got its own government, and in 1844 the Portuguese Government of India stopped administering the territories of Macau, Solor and Timor, restricting themselves to the Malabar coast. At the time of British India's independence in 1947, Portuguese India included a number of enclaves on India's western coast, including Goa proper, as well as the coastal enclaves of Daman and Diu. The German Romantic artist Ferdinand Piloty looked to Lucas Cranachís 16th-century woodcut of the full-length Saint George as inspiration for this lithograph. He did not copy the saint directly, showing him reversed, at three-quarter length, and in a shallower space. Yet the halo effect of the lighting, Georgeís glorious hair, and the implied glint of the intricate armor leave little doubt as to the holy nature of the knightís errand. Piloty and his colleagues Johann Strixner and Alois Senefelder dramatically fueled the German Romantic enthusiasm for the artistic past, through the creation both of exacting reproductions and nostalgic new works.. Leading the Wampanoag people around Narragansett Bay, he responded aggressively when the Massachusetts and Plymouth colonies repeatedly broke treaties with the local tribes and expanded westward. "King Philips War" broke out in June 1675, with raids and battles fought from the Connecticut River Valley north into Maine. When a truce was made in April 1678, the Native population had been reduced by more than half and rendered effectively landless. Many colonial settlements suffered great damage, with adult male numbers decimated, the economy ruined, and the western frontier pushed back by miles. A century later, Revere produced this portrait of Metacomet to illustrate a history that glossed over the wars true costs.. Philip King of Mount Hope. 1772. Engraving.
