Man with a Celestial Globe 1624 Nicolaes Eliasz Pickenoy Dutch Although recently published as a work by Werner van den Valckert (born about 1585, died 1627/28), this panel is almost certainly a comparatively early work by another Amsterdam portraitist, Nicolaes Eliasz. At the death of the conservative Cornelis van der Voort (born about 1576, died 1624), Eliasz. and the young Thomas de Keyser (see A Musician and His Daughter of 1629, 64.65.4) became the leading portraitists in Amsterdam until Rembrandt arrived in the winter of 1631-32. In its description of physical qualities and in expression this portrait is engaging, but its lack of animation and psychological intensity make the contemporary ascents of Hals and Rembrandt easy to understand.. Baron Francois van Aerssen (27 September 1572 to 27 December 1641), lord of Sommelsdijk, Ooltgensplaat and Spijk, descended from the important Van Aerssen family, was one of the dominant statesmen and diplomats of the Netherlands in the first half of the 17th century. Petrus Scriverius (1576-1660). Artist: Frans Hals (Dutch, Antwerp 1582/83-1666 Haarlem). Dimensions: 8 3/4 x 6 1/2 in. (22.2 x 16.5 cm). Date: 1626.Scriverius was a distinguished historian, poet, and scholar of classical literature. His wife, Anna van der Aar, was the daughter of a Leiden city councilman. In this pair of portraits Hals employs the scale, oval format, and illusionistic framing device that for several decades had been common in Dutch portrait prints. The male portrait alone was engraved in 1626, by Jan van de Velde II; impressions would have been sent to scholarly colleagues throughout Europe. The panels were retained as family keepsakes, in which Hals achieved the same vivid effects that he usually described on a much larger scale. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Portrait of Walter Devereux (1539-1576), First Earl of Essex. Artist: British Painter. Culture: British. Dimensions: 41 1/8 x 31 1/2 in. (104.5 x 80 cm). Date: dated 1572.Walter Devereux succeeded his grandfather as Viscount Hereford and Lord Ferrers in 1558. He was joint custodian of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1568. The following year, he helped put down the Northern Rising and was appointed marshal of the army at Leicester. He was lord lieutenant of County Stafford from 1569 until his death. Faithful to Queen Elizabeth I, Devereux was installed as a Knight of the Garter in 1572, and created Earl of Essex the same year. He sailed for Ireland in the summer of 1573 in an attempt to colonize Ulster, a costly venture that ended in failure in the summer of 1575.
