Charlemagne (742/747/748-814), also known as Charles the Great or Charles I was the eldest child of King of the Franks, Pepin the Short. He took the Frankish throne after his father's death in 768, initially co-ruling with his brother Carloman I, who died in 771, leaving Charlemagne as undisputed ruler of the Franks. Charlemagne considered himself a protector of the papacy, and invaded northern Italy to remove the Lombards from power, becoming King of Italy in 774. He also led incursions into Muslim Spain and campaigned against the Saxons of the east, Christianising them upon penalty of death, resulting in events such as the Massacre of Verden. Uniting large swathes of Western Europe during the early Middle Ages, Charlemagne reached the height of his power when he was crowned 'Emperor of the Romans' in 800, recognised as the true successor of the Roman emperors of old. Sayyid Barghash bin Said Al-Busaid, GCMG, GCTE (1837 - March 26, 1888) (Arabic: برغش بن سعيد البوسعيد‎), son of Said bin Sultan, was the second Sultan of Zanzibar. Barghash ruled Zanzibar from October 7, 1870 to March 26, 1888. Barghash is credited with building much of the infrastructure of Stone Town, including piped water, public baths, a police force, roads, parks, hospitals and large administrative buildings such as the Bait el-Ajaib (House of Wonders). Barghash was perhaps the last Sultan to maintain a measure of true independence from European control. He did consult with European 'advisors' who had immense influence, but he was still the central figure they wrestled to control. He crossed wits with diplomats from Britain, America, Germany, France and Portugal and was often able to play one country off another in a skillful endgame of pre-colonial chess.

Men ride camels and horses through the street and carry lanterns and torches. There is a lot of view from the houses. Under, a large square with many people. Opening of the American Centennial Exhibition: Chorus singing the Centennial Hymn, from a sketch by our special artist, 1876. 'Bishop Matthew Simpson then offered up a prayer, which was followed by Whittier's Centennial Hymn, sung by a chorus of a thousand voices.
