Treating The Mentally Sick -- The advance of scientific research and the closer co-operation of doctors in every branch of medicine has transferred the old asylums into hospitals for treatment. Patients are now treated for mental sickness, with no more embarassment than if they were physically ill. Patients run their own sports clubs, cafeterias, social clubs and libraries. Male patients work on the hospital farms while female patients give a helping hand in the laundry. Nearly all mental hospitals in Britain are part of the Regional Hospital Services under the National Health Act of 1948. May 12, 1952. (Photo by British Official Photograph).

Reportage on family carers. A family carer is a person who helps someone in their family when they lose their autonomy, due to illness or old age. Mimie had to go and live in her mother's apartment when her father died. Mimie's mother, who is 98, cannot walk any more and has to be helped in all her daily activities. She requires constant attention which limits Mimie to 4 hours off per week, during which a female attendant helps out. The situation of family carers is largely unknown in France, to such an extent that in many cases, carers don't even know they are carers. Yet there are 8.3 million people aged 16 or over, who regularly help out at one of their close family member's homes.

France, Brittany, Medreac on 2022-03-23. At the beginning of 2022, the journalist Victor Castanet denounced in his book Les Fossoyeurs the scandal of the accusations of "institutional mistreatment" of the residents of the Orpéa group's retirement homes, provoking the fall of this world leader in residential care for dependent elderly people. It is in this context that the Residence Les Menhirs, claiming a virtuous and benevolent model, agreed to welcome me for a long period of time within their establishment for a photographic and documentary immersion. Located in Medreac, in the heart of rural Brittany, this retirement home applies the "Humanitude" philosophy of care. This method of good treatment that they have been applying since the opening of the EHPAD in 2008 is based on five principles: zero care by force, without abandoning care; "living and dying on your feet"; respect for privacy and singularity; openness to the outside world; a place of life, a place of desires.
