Slow slicing' (pinyin: lingchi, alternately transliterated Ling Chi or Leng T'che), also translated as the slow process, the lingering death, or death by a thousand cuts, was a form of execution used in China from roughly 900 CE until its abolition in 1905. In this form of execution, the condemned person was killed by using a knife to methodically remove portions of the body over an extended period of time. The term lingchi derives from a classical description of ascending a mountain slowly. Lingchi was reserved for crimes viewed as especially severe, such as treason and killing one's parents. The process involved tying the person to be executed to a wooden frame, usually in a public place. The flesh was then cut from the body in multiple slices in a process that was not specified in detail in Chinese law and therefore most likely varied. In later times, opium was sometimes administered either as an act of mercy or as a way of preventing fainting. The punishment worked on three levels:

In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale Marie Barnet, the daughter of a very poor woodcutter who could not feed his family and so gave his daughter to the Virgin Mary when she asked for her. Mary gave Marie instructions which she did not follow. Yet every time Mary asked her she continued to lie. A king had fallen in love with Marie. After Mary took her children because she would not admit her lie, the people of the kingdom revolted to burn her at the stake, as shown here.

Luther burns the Papal Bull in Wittenberg. Martin Luther burns the papal bull in Wittenberg. This illustration appeared in Gottfried's Historical Chronicle, Frankfurt in 1619. The so-called "Exsurge Domine" was a papal bull issued by Pope Leo X on June 15, 1520. The pope issued it in response to Martin Luther, who would become a promiment leader of the Protestant Reformation, posting his 95 Theses in 1517. The bull demanded that Luther retract many of his statements, which the bull called errors, by December 20. Luther did not and on December 20, Luther burned the bull, as shown here.
