The 1906 caption reads: MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS IN PRISON.The unfortunate Mary Stuart, Elizabeth's rival for the throne of England, may have been an evil woman. She was certainly an unfortunate one, but personally so charming that every one who saw her loved her. We see her here when the very nobles who bring her death-warrant cannot conceal their admiration for her courage and sorrow for her fate. Mary was in prison from 1568 to her execution in 1587.

Nun between a prior and a young monk. A prior and a young monk are sitting on a set table in front of a fire. For the prior there is a young non, which is justified by him. Behind her back the nun is stroking the young monk. The fireplace is decorated with a medallion on which Maria with the Christ child. Behind the company hangs a representation of Moses that beats water from the rock for the Israelites. Right rear are nuns to spin.

Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556). English theologian and archbishop of Canterbury (1533-1555). After the ascension to the throne of the Catholic Queen Mary I of England (Mary Tudor), Cranmer was tried for treason and heresy. Imprisoned for more than two years, he recanted several times and reconciled with the Catholic Church. Shah Abbas the Great (or Shah Abbas I) (Persian: ??? ???? ????) (January 27, 1571 - January 19, 1629) was Shah (king) of Iran, and generally considered the greatest ruler of the Safavid dynasty. He was the third son of Shah Mohammad. Abbas came to the throne during a troubled time for Iran. Under his weak-willed father, the country was riven with discord between the different factions of the Qizilbash army, who killed Abbas' mother and elder brother. Meanwhile, Iran's enemies, the Ottoman Empire and the Uzbeks, exploited this political chaos to seize territory for themselves. In 1587, one of the Qizilbash leaders, Murshid Qoli Khan, overthrew Shah Mohammed in a coup and placed the 16-year-old Abbas on the throne. But Abbas was no puppet and soon seized power for himself. He reduced the influence of the Qizilbash in the government and the military and reformed the army, enabling him to fight the Ottomans and Uzbeks and reconquer Iran's lost provinces.
