The Marshal de Biron (1562-1602) was a French soldier, whose efforts won him renown. However, he then plotted to split France into sections and to assume for himself leadership of an independent Burgundy. He was accused in absentia of high treason and then tricked into coming to Paris, where he was arrested (as seen in the (as seen in the illustration at left) and beheaded at the Bastille (as seen in the illustration at right) on July 31, 1602. The two illustrations here are the front and reserve sides of a medal from the time period.
