Sister Mary Paul Lewis, a Sister of the Order of the Holy Family, New Orleans. Doris Ulmann, photographer (American, 1882 - 1934) Dec-31 At the urging of her friend Julia Peterkin (1880-1961), an author with whom she collaborated, Doris Ulmann made several trips to New Orleans between 1929 and 1931. There she became intrigued with the Creole and Cajun residents as well as with the Sisters of the Holy Family convent in the city's French Quarter. She photographed the nuns (most of them African American) individually, in groups, and with their black students. This unidentified portrait presents a sister who seems to possess a regal bearing, her hands carefully cradling spectacles, and reflects Ulmann's interest in cloistered or isolated communities. Angel, Sainte-Chapelle Made 1853-1854 France. Auguste Mestral was one of five photographers hired by the French government in 1851 to document the nationís architectural heritage in photographic surveys known as the Heliographic Missions. A few years later, the sculptor Adolphe-Victor Geoffroy Dechaume commissioned him to record the angels of the Passion he had just produced for the restoration of Sainte-Chapelle, a splendid 13th-century chapel in the heart of Paris. Mestral photographed each sculpture on the ground, backed with a white sheet to set it off, before it was hoisted into place atop the spires. The angel depicted here bears some of the instruments of the Passion, objects associated with Christís torments on the cross. This iconography, while not historically accurate, forms part of a 19th-century fascination with the Middle Ages.. Salted paper print . O. Mestral

The images depict a Mekkanerin (woman from Mecca) in bridal attire, alongside a servant, an eunuch, and a child in the presence of their master. The setting is Djiddah, showcasing the social life and customs of women and servants in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, during the late 19th century. Caucasus - Derivish with swordfish sword and begging bowl. Darwesh or Dervish, as it is known in European languages, refers to members of Sufi Muslim ascetic religious Tariqahs - tariket. Responding that both knew that it is immortality to me to be bound up with you,” Cameron willingly accepted the assignment. Costuming family and friends, she made some 245 exposures to arrive at the handful she wanted for the book. Ultimately—and predictably—she was unhappy with the way her photographs looked reduced in scale and translated into wood engravings, and she chose to issue a deluxe edition, at her own risk, that included a dozen full size photographic prints in each of two volumes.. Dance in Burma can be divided into dramatic, folk and village, and nat dances, each having distinct characteristics. Although Burmese dance has been influenced by the dance traditions of its neighbours, in particular Thailand, it retains unique qualities that distinguish it from other regional styles, including angular, fast-paced and energetic movements and emphasis on pose, not movement. Various types of Burmese music use an array of traditional musical instruments, assembled in an orchestra known as hsaing waing which the Burmese saing saya Kyaw Kyaw Naing has made more widely known in the West.
