El Cid Campeador  was the name given Rodrigo, or Ruy, Diaz de Vivar (c. 1040-1099), a nobleman in the court of Castile. He served under Castilian kings and was involved in the struggle between the Christian rulers and Muslim rulers for control of Spain. At one point in his career, he was banished by the king of Spain but later recalled. When El Cid's father asks El Cid to avenge an insult made to him, El Cid honors his father's wish. However, the person he has to kill is Don Gomez, the father of his fiancee (Jimena). Honor prevails and El Cid does - seen here in this illustration.
