Martin Luther (1483-1546) made his solemn and public protest against the abuses in connection with the sale of indulgences in 1517. He was summoned before the Diet of Worms in 1521. During his stay in Wartburg he translated the Scriptures into German.

Francois Fenelon (1651-1715) was a French poet and writer. He was also a Roman Catholic bishop and theologian. His best known work, published in 1699, was the adventures of Telemachus. He served as a missionary to the Huguenots, pointing out to them the problems with Protestantism. He also served as tutor to the Duke of Burgundy, who became Louis XV. Fenelon promoted the belief Quietism and is viewed as a defender of human rights.

Matthew Parker (6 August 1504 - 17 May 1575) was an English bishop. He was the Archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England from 1559 until his death in 1575. He was also an influential theologian and arguably the co-founder (with a previous Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, and the theologian Richard Hooker) of a distinctive tradition of Anglican theological thought.
