The Annunciation is the traditional introduction to matins, the first of the eight canonical hours. This striking scene recalls the archangel Gabriel's announcement to the Virgin Mary that she was to become the mother of God. The humble scene, steeped in monumentality and innocence, honors one of the most significant moments in Christian history—the coming of God into the world. Flemish artists, in particular, tenderly elaborated this event. The Virgin is usually shown within an architectural interior. Typically her bedroom, this interior space includes a curtained bed, a wooden bench, windows through which a landscape is revealed, and a simple earthenware ewer filled with lilies that proclaim her innocence. Fragment of a Ship Flag. Fragment of a ship flag, the upper right corner, painted on one side. In the middle a crowned weapon (presumably from Leon and Castillia) surrounded by the chain of the golden fleece, and on a red bat cross. On the flight side a corintic column surrounded by a banderole with the inscription: Plus ULT RA. This flag probably bears the symbols of the Archduken of the Southern Nederlanden Albert and Isabella (1598-1621).

George Henry Halls large sketchbook contains highly finished images of locations in Italy and the northeastern United States, with the majority of pages devoted to his Italian travels in 1852. Since Hall is primarily known as a genre and still-life painter, this sketchbook provides a rare glimpse into his experiments with landscape composition. Executed naturalistically in graphite with accents of white watercolor, the drawings follow the picturesque landscape conventions established by the Hudson River School. Painted Fan with s Design of Feathers and Three Medallions 1893-1909 Charles Edward Conder This large hand-painted fan was made by the British artist Charles Edward Conder. He began making fans relatively late in his career in the 1890s, a period which marked the transition from historicism to Art Nouveau in the arts. This fan exemplifies this transition in the combination of historical Rococo motifs and Art Nouveau elements.The design consists of three medallions, which are placed against a background of feathers and other ornaments. The three oval medallions or compartments are filled with depictions of women. The central horizontal oval appears to show a veiled woman in a black dress, while the outer two vertical ovals respectively show a woman out in nature, and a nude female figure. The medallions are surrounded by pink floral edge, which stands out from the background decorations in green, grey and blue. Photo album with twelve photos of Frans-Indochina on the occasion of the Hanoi Exposition 1902, 1902 scrapbook SCREPHOOK with twelve development gelatin silver prints of the then French-Indochina, the current Vietnam. The album was made on the occasion of the Hanoi Exposition, an unofficial world exhibition in Hanoi in 1902. In contrast to what the title suggests, the album does not contain any photos of the exhibition. Instead, people see landscapes, towns and villages and the inhabitants of Indochina. The album contains no captions - except for the last photo - and the photographer is also unknown. The photos were probably taken by a professional photographer and the album was sold to visitors and travelers.
