Decapitation of two kings commissioned by a Roman emperor; Debellare Superbos; Ground principle of Roman politics. From his throne a Roman emperor gives a lot to behead the assignment a blindfolded king. The head of the second king is already cut off on the floor. In addition to the emperor, a bluring man is stopped by a number of soldiers. This print illustrates the second part of the principle of Roman politics included by Vergilius: "Parcere sub-forming, Sed Debellare Superbos" (Vergilius, Aeneïs 6,853). According to this principle, the subjects would be spared, but they were persisting stubbornly were destroyed. Pendant of a print of the first part of this system.

The Return of Joseph 1720-70 John Michael Rysbrack Flemish This drawing belongs to a group by Rysbrack inspired by the Old Testament story of Joseph, although the traditional title is puzzling, since Joseph never returned to Canaan from Egypt in the Genesis account. The short beardless youth may be Josephs younger brother Benjamin, in which case the image could represent the moment that Joseph reveals his identity to his brothers in Egypt (Genesis 45.14). The group around the altar at left echoes elements found in carved relief overmantles that Rysbrack made for Clandon Park, Surrey, and Houghton Hall, Norfolk in the 1720s. His ultimate source was an antique sculpture titled "Sacrifice of a Bull" reproduced in engraving for Bernard de Montfaucons book "LAntiquité Expliquée" (1719).. The Return of Joseph 395713

Hamlet and the Ghost of his Father mid-19th century Adam Vogler Austrian This dramatic nighttime subject, drawn from Hamlet (act 1, scene 4), shows the prince encountering his fathers ghost outside Elsinore, the Danish royal castle. Restrained by his friend Horatio, Hamlet struggles to follow the spirit, who will later reveal that he was murdered and demand revenge. Voglers composition responds to a painting that the Swiss artist Henry Fuseli created in 1789 for John Boydells Shakespeare Gallery, which the younger artist would have known through prints (see 42.119.545). This finely drawn variation emphasizes the mysterious moonlit atmosphere and adds accurately detailed Renaissance costumes, a strategy in keeping with the historical Romanticism that Vogler learned at the Viennese Academy from the Nazarene painter Joseph von Führich.. This highly refined drawing depicts a scene from Racines Andromaque, a complicated story of unrequited love and political treachery. Cléone introduces the love-blind Orestes to Hermione, who exploits his affection to make him do her bidding. Girodet skillfully contrasts Orestess eagerness and Hermiones calculating character.
