Jewish New Year In The Holy City -- Jewish new year (Sept. 24, 1949) the year of 5710, saw religious Jews pilgrim to mount Zion, the only spot in the holy city, closest to the wailing wall, to which the Jewish Orthocox walked for their new year prayers. This year they prayed at David's tomb situated next to the church of dormition on mount Zion only a limited number were permitted into the area which is a military area otherwise closed to the general public. Here the church of dormition is seen through the branches of a tree. The facade has a richly ornamented portal. In the lunette of the portal are figures of polychromed terracotta representing the Madonna and Child with 2 angels. Post-medieval: Views of the exterior and interior, including: wooden pulpit, Baroque altar and tabernacle, sculpture, frescoes. The walls within the church are covered with fresco decoration from the 15th century by artists of the Marche school. The Nativity, the Madonna Enthroned with Saints, the Tree of Jesse, the Coronation of the Virgin, and the Last Judgment are some of the scenes depicted. Taizō-kai Mandara Taizō-kai Mandara, 14th century. Opaque watercolor, ink and gold on silk, overall: 84 1/2 x 50 1/8 in. (214.6 x 127.3 cm);. The mandala (or mandara, in Japanese) is a diagrammatic tool used by Buddhists to guide their meditation and prayer. Most mandalas direct the viewer to travel mentally on a prescribed path, stopping to contemplate and address each figure depicted. This early Womb World (Taizō-kai) mandala is part of a pair that would have been displayed on opposite walls of a temple of Vajrayana (esoteric) Buddhism, representing different but equally viable approaches to enlightenment. The Burmese city of Monywa is in Sagaing Division, located 136 km northwest of Mandalay on the eastern bank of the River Chindwin. Legend attributes the first Buddhist doctrine in Burma to 228 BCE when Sohn Uttar Sthavira, one of the royal monks to Emperor Ashoka the Great of India, came to the country with other monks and sacred texts. However, the era of Buddhism truly began in the 11th century after King Anawrahta of Pagan (Bagan) was converted to Theravada Buddhism. Today, 89% of the population of Burma is Theravada Buddhist.

The unidentified artist who painted this bucolic scene, dominated by the figure of the sixteenth-century Portuguese monk Saint John of God holding the infant Christ, was part of a European-influenced painting tradition that first developed in the sixteenth century in Spanish colonial Cuzco, Peru. Delicate flowers, birds, and trees spread across the composition, unifying the saint with vignettes of the Flight into Egypt at left and other saints at right. Eighteenth-century estate inventories in New Spain described these types of paintings as landscapes inhabited by saints.” Although similar religious subjects hung in churches in colonial Peru, the prominence of landscape made this kind of painting equally desirable for private collectors. There are a significant number of late Medieval Madonnas & Child paintings as well as High Renaissance paintings from the Bolognese school. The objects include a processional cross, and two reliqueries. Additionally there are some photos of manuscript pages of hymnals with objects they are displayed with. The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus, October 4, 651 B.C.E. Papyrus, pigment, ink, Overall: 10 15/16 × 210 5/16 in. (27.8 × 534.2 cm). The Brooklyn Oracle Papyrus records the petition of a man named Pemou on behalf of his father, Harsiese. Harsiese was an ordinary priest in the service of the god Amun-Re at Karnak, but he wished to leave that god's service and join the priesthood of the neighboring temple of Montu-Re-Horakhty. Because temple personnel were seen as the property of the divinity, the god had to be consulted about any change in staff. Pemou asked for the god's advice on behalf of his father, and the god responded favorably. To record the verdict, Pemou had this papyrus drawn up and decorated. The papyrus shows the procession of a image of Amun-Re, the fragments of whose shrine can be seen above the carrying poles borne by the priests. The interior underwent a radical restoration in the 18th cent. in the Baroque style. The campanile was built in 1335. Photos include exterior views of the facade and the campanile along with several details. The interior views show the Baroque nave with its vaults and cupola. There are paintings in the vaults and over the altars, including one of St. Thomas & Christ over the main altar. There are also photos of the marble paliotto in front of the altar (17th cent.). Other interior details are the baptismal font, a wooden statue of the Madonna & Child, and wooden statues of two saints, one St. Peter.
