Born at Kensington Palace, London, she was the only daughter of Francis, Duke of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. She originally accepted a proposal of marriage from George's elder brother, Albert Victor but following his death from pneumonia only six weeks later, she married the Duke of York in 1893. This is the portrait of the Queen painted by Mr. William A. Dargie. Mr. Dargie arrived in Australia on Sunday with the portrait, which he painted from four sittings given by the Queen at Buckingham Palace before Christmas. The portraits was commissioned by the late Mr. James P. Beveridge, of Melbourne. It will be hung in Parliament House, Canberra. January 14, 1955.
