Harriet Beecher STOWE Uncle Tom's Cabin first published 1852. showing Eliza and her baby escaping from Haley by running across the half-frozen river. Later they escaped to safety via the Underground Railway'. Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe was an American abolitionist and author. She came from the Beecher family, a famous religious family, and is best known for her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. It depicts the harsh life for African Americans under slavery.

Pope Gregory VII excommunicated King Henry IV of Germany . Not wishing to bear the social results of the papal ban, Henry crossed Mont Cenis in the middle of winter to make peace. Gregory was at the castle of Canossa, high in the mountains in north-central Italy and let Henry, clad in the thin robe of a penitent, stand in the courtyard in A.D. 1077 for three days. At length, Gregory granted Henry absolution but only on humiliating terms of submission.
