This enhanced-color image mosaic shows Daphnis, one of the moons embedded in Saturn's rings, in the Keeler gap on the sunlit side of the rings. Daphnis is seen kicking up three waves in the gap's outer edge. Three wave crests of diminishing sizes trail the moon. In each successive crest, the shape of the wave changes as the ring particles within the crest interact and collide with each other. A thin strand of ring material to the lower left of Daphnis is newly visible in this image, and there are intricate features that also hadn't been previously observed in the third wave crest downstream (see Figure 1). Cassini was at a very shallow angle above the rings (only about 15 degrees) when this image was taken. The resulting foreshortening makes it difficult to tell the difference in this image between features representing vertical structure and those representing radial, or outward from Saturn, structure within the ring plane. Nonetheless, Cassini imaging scientists have determined that

. Perseverance Rover Looks West. Composed of 53 images, this mosaic looks west toward the rim of Mars' Jezero Crater on July 8, 2023, the 847th Martian day, or sol, of NASA's Perseverance rover mission. The rover's Mastcam-Z instrument captured the images when Perseverance was about halfway through a boulder field that was 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) wide. Arizona State University leads the operations of the Mastcam-Z instrument, working in collaboration with Malin Space Science Systems in San Diego, on the design, fabrication, testing, and operation of the cameras, and in collaboration with the Niels Bohr Institute of the University of Copenhagen on the design, fabrication, and testing of the calibration targets. A key objective for Perseverance's mission on Mars is astrobiology, including the search for signs of ancient microbial life. The rover will characterize the planet's geology and past climate, pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet, and be the first mission to colle

One of NASA's twin MarCO spacecraft took this image of Mars on October 2. This is the first time a CubeSat -- a kind of low-cost, briefcase-sized spacecraft -- has done so. The image was taken as a test of exposure settings. The MarCO mission, led by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, hopes to produce more images as the CubeSats approach Mars ahead of Nov. 26. That's when they'll demonstrate their communications capabilities while NASA's InSight spacecraft attempts to land (InSight won't rely on them, however; NASA's Mars orbiters will be relaying the spacecraft's data back to Earth). A wide-angle camera on top of MarCO-B produced the image of Mars. The camera looks straight up from the deck of the CubeSat. Parts related to the spacecraft's high-gain antenna are visible on either side of the image. Mars appears as a small red dot at the right of the image. In order to take the image, the team had to program the CubeSat to rotate in space so that the deck of its b

The streak of a comet's tail appears near the Sun, which is blocked by a blue disk in this LASCO C3 coronagraph taken by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The white circle represents the size and position of the Sun. Nearly all of the sungrazers observed by SOHO are members of the same group (the Kreutz group), the remains of a single, parent comet that broke up some centuries ago.

The THEMIS VIS camera contains 5 filters. The data from different filters can be combined in multiple ways to create a false color image. These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image. Today's false color image shows the edge of the polar cap and Argentea Planum.
