Saint Jerome (one of a pair) mid-16th century Spanish, possibly Aragon These roundels (see also 34.34) from the Conde de Las Almenas collection in Madrid were separated after auction in New York in 1927 but reunited in the Museum a few years later. They may have been part of a larger series, since there is no reason— biblical or historical— to show Saint Agnes and Saint Jerome together (the pairing may reflect the patrons’ given names, however). Both Agnes and Jerome were popular subjects in the religious art of Spain. Jerome is shown, pen in hand, writing a book, presumably his Latin translation of the Bible, known as the Vulgate. His robe has the ermine-fringed collar of a cardinal and his hat hangs on the wall behind him; the head and a paw of the lion he befriended after extracting a thorn peek out beneath his arm. Sculptural group with The Lamentation Over the Dead Christ 1487 Eastern Central Italian, Emilia-Romagna or the Marche This work is the largest and most spectacular surviving example of sculptural maiolica from the Renaissance. The standing figures are set in high relief against a landscape of rocky yellow earth and green grass. Conceived as an altarpiece, the scene depicts the moment of grief and reflection after Christs body is taken down from the cross. It allowed the artist—a highly skilled potter—to explore the expressive potential of his medium.Although this work surpasses in ambition many earthenware vessels from the period, it was made with traditional maiolica techniques. Therefore, the color palette is limited due to the chemical properties of the pigments. The patterns on the mourners garments are related to contemporary European fashion but also recall the energetic Spanish-influenced ornament found on many objects in this exhibition.. Bust of an unidentified Emperor of the Antonine dynasty probably mid-16th century Italian Carved from the same attractive piece of stone as 38.150.7, banded in pink, white, and gray, the bust formed the side of a gunpowder flask. The Italian Renaissance brought with it a wholehearted embrace of classical antiquity throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Emulation of ancient cameos played a large part. Carvers invested ancient myths with increasingly refined compositions and techniques, paying close attention to the latest archaeological discoveries. Demand for Italian carvers took them to all the courts of Europe. Milan in particular developed a taste for cameos with wondrous atmospheric effects..
