. Isabella of Bourbon, wife of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy died in 1465. Their daughter Mary built a funeral monument for her in the abbey of Saint Michael in Antwerp. The tomb was surrounded by 24 figures of mourning family members and ancestors, known as weepers (pleurants). They symbolized the importance of the Burgundy dynasty. These ten figures are all that remain.

Wild Man, c. 1450. Germany, 15th century. Bronze; overall: 13.4 cm (5 1/4 in.). Common in medieval art, the wild man is humanlike in appearance with long shaggy hair over his entire body and typically carries a club. Living at the fringe of society in woodland areas, wild men symbolized man in his natural, uncivilized state. Perhaps derived from the part-man part-beast satyr of antiquity, the wild man symbolized lust and aggression in contrast to the spiritual love embodied in medieval chivalry. This bearded version is shown kneeling while raising his right arm holding a club. He wears a twisted cloth circlet on his head and a similar belt at the waist. It has been suggested that this sculpture originally formed part of a suspended candelabra. It may also have served as support for large metal vessels.

The Puritan. Artist: Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, Dublin 1848-1907 Cornish, New Hampshire). Dimensions: 30 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 13 in. (77.5 x 47 x 33 cm). Date: 1883-86, cast 1899 or after.In 1881 Saint-Gaudens was commissioned by Chester W. Chapin, a railroad tycoon and congressman, to sculpt a large-scale bronze likeness of an ancestor, Deacon Samuel Chapin (1595-1675), one of the three founding fathers of Springfield, Massachusetts. The sculptor wrote in his "Reminiscences" that: "The statue . was to represent Deacon Samuel Chapin, but I developed it into an embodiment . of the 'Puritan.'" On Thanksgiving Day 1887, "The Puritan" was unveiled on Stearns Square in Springfield, at one end of a site designed by Stanford White. The monument was relocated to Merrick Park in 1899.
