The Flagellation of Christ ca. 1460-70 Eastern Germany The rather crude execution and placement of figures floating in space without reference to a setting would seem to suggest that the author of this sheet has drawn upon several sources, some older and some more recent. The soldiers are based on figural inventions in the supple style of the International Gothic from the beginning of the fifteenth century, while the figure of Christ against the column follows a pattern disseminated later in the century.. (40.0 x 50.2 cm) (outer frame), Pen and brown ink wash over black chalk on laid paper, Italy, 16th century, Jacopo Zucchi trained in Florence under Giorgio Vasari and spent most of his career in Rome working for members of the Medici family in residence there. This study relates to decoration in the Villa Medici on the Pincian Hill in Rome, where Zucchi worked on several projects. This frecoed frieze, designed by Zucchi and executed by members of his shop in 1587, survives in the Villa's Chambre des imprese. It represents putti playing among garlands of fruit and elaborately sculpted volutes and cartouches with the personal emblems of illustrious members of the Medici family. Butterfield, William 1876 A broadly representative selection of drawings for building and manufacture of designs, representing the various types of commissions Butterfield received and illustrating his work in promoting Gothic Revival. Also included are estimates as well as record drawings (measured drawings) of buildings not designed by Butterfield. William Butterfield (1814-1900) was a British architect known for the Gothic revival style he championed. He studied with E. L. Blackburne and set up his own practice in 1840. A member of the Cambridge Camden Society, later the Ecclesiastical Society, he contributed designs to their journal The Ecclesiologist. Most of his work was for church designs, apart from that for schools and colleges (Rugby School and Keble College Oxford), and the Winchester County Hospital.
