Sketchbook Peter Frederick Rothermel (American, 1817-1895). Sketchbook, 1857. Graphite with ink and watercolor on cream, medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 5 11/16 x 8 5/8 x 3/8 in. (14.4 x 21.9 x 1 cm). This forty-two-page sketchbook contains drawings by the history painter Peter Frederick Rothermel of scenes in Genazzano, Italy, forty miles east of Rome. He documented the local architecture, sculpture, landscape, and people, while also including sketches for narrative subjects. The costumes and daily life of the townfolk are captured in several skillful figure studies, including this image of a man leaning against a stone wall. American Art 1857

Italian Sketchbook Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823-1880). Italian Sketchbook, 1867-1868. Graphite on tan, medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 5 x 9 x 7/16 in. (12.7 x 22.9 x 1.1 cm). This sketchbook served as a travel diary for the Hudson River School landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford during his journeys in France, Switzerland, and Italy. In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. The small framed motifs that appear on this and other pages of the sketchbook show his initial experiments with composition. American Art 1867-1868

Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Column of Antoninus and a Roman Obelisk 16th century Anonymous This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound set of prints

Rocky Landscape with a Gorge, First Version.Fragments of a ship can be discerned in the sky above the landscape. Segers cut the large plate with the ship into pieces and used them for three etchings of mountain landscapes.

(132.56 x 45.09 cm) (image), Ink on paper, Japan, 19th century, Rai San'yo_ was the headmaster of a Confucian academy in Kyoto in the early nineteenth century. In true literati fashion, he began painting purely for personal enjoyment. While he came into contact with many paintings from China, he developed a distinctive style of his own characterized by a bold use of the brush within rather orthodox compositions. In the inscription on this painting, San'yo_ clearly identifies himself with the literati tradition:In painting there is a difference between those of high spirit and those who seek to impress. If painting becomes fine and delicate, it will be narrow and limited. My ink-play should not be laborious. Should it ever become so, I will throw it away.

The inscription at the upper right translates as follows: Roelant Savery depicted this from life in Bohemia.’ It has generally been assumed that Jacob Matham, who published the print, also engraved it. The loose, lively style, however, deviates significantlyfrom Matham’s much tauter manner of engraving. Perhaps Savery made the print himself after his own drawing.

From the Mill Alexander Robertson (American, born Scotland, 1772-1841). From the Mill, September 11, 1796. Black ink on off-white, moderately thick, moderately textured laid paper, Sheet: 8 3/4 x 11 1/2 in. (22.2 x 29.2 cm). In this drawing Alexander Robertson used a stylized graphic shorthand developed by his brother Archibald, who authored the first drawing manual published in the United States, Elements of the Graphic Arts (1802). The artist rendered leaves with looping strokes of his pen, created shading with parallel diagonal lines, and used lighter outlines for background motifs to indicate spatial distance. While the presence of a mill on the Hudson River suggests the beginning of industrial development, the drawing presents a harmonious vision of man in nature, with its tiny figure of a fisherman tucked among the rocks at the left.
