Between a support, a caryatid upon a high plant and a wall panel is a narrow passage. Curtains hang on top of the openings. this image from the collection "Photographs of American Military Activities during World War I" captures a cell inside the Monastery at Rangeval, which was occupied by U.S. soldiers in May 1918. The room was formerly used by a single monk and now serves as the sleeping quarters for an entire squad. The room features a heavy beam ceiling, crumbling stone walls, and mellow-toned plaster. It is decorated with O.D. coats, haversacks, and blankets, giving it a picturesque appearance. The image is labeled as 111-SC-15413 from Captain J. Andre Smith.
