. 1 Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment Pte Evans had completed 11 years military service prior to the outbreak of war in 1914, when he was immediately posted to the Western Front with D Company. He was reported missing, aged 27, during the First Battle of Ypres on 29 October 1914. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate at Ypres. . 3 Battalion, Norfolk Regiment Captain Brown enlisted in July 1914 and received his commission the following month. He was posted to the Western Front in January 1915, where he was wounded. He returned to the Western Front in March 1916 and was wounded again during the early stages of the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. Returning to active service, he was killed in action near Guillemont on 4 September 1916. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. C Company, 56th Battalion (2nd Reinforcements), Australian Imperial Force Corporal Naismith, 1703, enlisted on 9 March 1916 at the age of 21. He joined his battalion in France on 24 September 1916 and was appointed Lance Corporal on 1 February 1917. He was killed in action on 2 April 1917. The Ma clique is a collective name for a group of Hui (Muslim Chinese) warlords in northwestern China who ruled the Chinese provinces of Qinghai, Gansu and Ningxia from the 1910s until 1949. There were three families in the Ma clique ('Ma' being a common Hui rendering of the common Muslim name, Muhammad), each of them controlling one area respectively. The three most prominent members of the clique were Ma Bufang, Ma Hongkui and Ma Hongbin, collectively known as the 'Xibei San Ma', (The Three Ma of the Northwest). Some contemporary accounts, such as Edgar Snow's, described the clique as the 'Four Ma', adding Ma Bufang's brother Ma Buqing to the list of the top warlords.

. Army Service Corps Lieutenant Cooke enlisted with the 9th Battalion, Manchester Regiment in October 1914. John Cooke entered the army from the Manchester University Officer Training Corps as a second lieutenant. He submitted an application for transfer to the Army Service Corps and was made lieutenant in June 1916. He served with a Mechanical Transport Company of the Army Service Corps attached to the 118th (and later the 11th) Siege Battery, Ammunition Column, Royal Garrison Artillery on the Western Front. His service was punctuated with several illnesses including inflamation of the heart and a displaced knee cartliage. He was admitted to 8th General Hospital in Rouen following a gun shot wound to the leg in August 1918. He later died of bronchopneumonia at 72nd General Hospital, aged 25, in France on 9 October 1918. He is buried at the Tourgeville Military Cemetery.
