. B Company, 44 Battalion, Australian Imperial Force Corporal W G H Bawden enlisted in Perth, Western Australia, on 7 January 1916 at the age of 18. After sailing from Freemantle on board HMAT Suevic in June 1916, Cpl Bawden served on the Western Front. He was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Croix de Guerre for continued gallantry in the front line during January to March 1917. On 8 March 1917, Cpl Bawden was severely wounded in the face while evacuating wounded civilian workers from a factory in Armentières under shell fire. His injuries resulted in the loss of his sight and required plastic surgery to reconstruct his face. Cpl Bawden was discharged from service on 19 February 1918. Prince Asaka Yasuhiko (October 2, 1887 - April 12, 1981) of Japan, was the founder of a collateral branch of the Japanese imperial family and a career officer in the Imperial Japanese Army. Son-in-law of Emperor Meiji and uncle by marriage of Emperor Showa (Hirohito), Prince Asaka was commander of Japanese forces in the final assault on Nanjing, then the capital city of Nationalist China in December 1937. He was implicated in the Nanjing massacre, but never charged.

The Armenian Genocide refers to the deliberate and systematic destruction of the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire during and just after World War I. It was implemented through wholesale massacres and deportations, with the deportations consisting of forced marches under conditions designed to lead to the death of the deportees. The total number of resulting Armenian deaths is generally held to have been between one and one and a half million. Other ethnic groups were similarly attacked by the Ottoman Empire during this period, including Assyrians and Greeks, and some scholars consider those events to be part of the same policy of extermination. It is widely acknowledged to have been one of the first modern genocides, as scholars point to the systematic, organized manner in which the killings were carried out to eliminate the Armenians, and it is the second most-studied case of genocide after the Holocaust. The word genocide was coined in order to describe these events.
