Jack Phillips. John George 'Jack' Phillips Wireless Operator on Titanic. Jack Philips was born in Farncombe, Surrey, on 11th April 1887. Phillips was educated locally and, after learning telegraphy, at a post office, he began working for the Marconi company. He was serving as senior wireless operator on board Titanic, which sank on 15th April 1912. As Titanic was sinking, Phillips worked tirelessly to send wireless messages to nearby ships for help. Francis Octavius Grenfell, V.C., and his twin brother, Riversdale "Rivy" Nonus Grenfell, officers in the 9th Lancers.  Francis earned the Victoria Cross in the early weeks of the First World War - awarded for gallantry while saving the guns of the 119th Battery, Royal Field Artillery at Audriegnes, Belgium. Field Marshal William Joseph 'Bill' Slim, 1st Viscount Slim KG GCB GCMG GCVO GBE DSO MC KS (6 August 1891 - 14 December 1970) was a British military commander and the 13th Governor-General of Australia. He fought in both the First and Second world wars and was wounded in action three times. During World War II he led the 14th Army, the so-called 'forgotten army' in the Burma campaign. From 1953 to 1959 he was Governor-General of Australia, regarded by many Australians as an authentic war hero who had fought with the Anzacs at Gallipoli.

A wooden crate more than a century old is shown Aug. 26 , 2022, at the Fort McCoy History Center in the historic Commemorative Area at Fort McCoy, Wis. The crate was donated to Fort McCoy by Alan McCoy of Sparta, Wis., who is the grandson of Maj. Gen. Robert Bruce McCoy for whom Fort McCoy is named after. The crate, which once carried lard buckets, traces back to the time of Camp Emery Upton and Camp Robinson in Wisconsin around 1910.
