This illustration dates to the early 1900s and shows an American victory at the revival of the Olympic Games in 1896 in Greece. The track-and-field program in Athens was dominated by athletes from the USA, who would go on to win nine of the 12 events. And on April 6, 1896, AmericanJames Connollyearned the distinction of becoming the very first Olympic champion of the modern era, as he clinched the triple jump title. Charles Pierre de Fredy, Baron de Coubertin(died 1937), also known as Pierre de Coubertin and Baron de Coubertin was a French educator and historian. He was also the founder of theInternational Olympic Committee and its secondPresident. He is known as the father of the modernOlympic Games.

View of the Jubel Stadium in Brussels during the gymnastics tournament that was held on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Royal Belgian Turnbond. The name of the Jubel Stadium was later changed to Heyselstadion and then in King Baudouin Stadium. A large delegation of the Utrechtsche Gymnastiek and Screen Association Bato participated in the tournament.

Zatopek Enters Stadium To Win Marathon -- The her of the VT Olympiad, Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia, enters the Olympic stadium at Helsinki today, July 27, just before winning the Olympic Marathon and his third gold medal of the Helsinki games. His time of two hours, 23 minutes, 3.2 seconds, is a new Olympic record. Earlier in the Olympiad, Zatopek won the 5,000 and 10,000 metre runs.
