Richard Humphreys, the Boxer John Hoppner British Boxing fascinated late eighteenth-century English artists and writers, providing a spectacle that combined violence with beautiful bodies. This portrait of a famous boxer must have been commissioned by his aristocratic manager and promoter Wilson Braddyll, in anticipation of a well-publicized match. The young boxer is depicted in his defensive stance, on the turf, and wearing breeches, silk stockings, and pumps. (Bouts were fought with bare fists at this time, increasing their brutality.).
