Richard Humphreys, the Boxer John Hoppner British Boxing fascinated late eighteenth-century English artists and writers, providing a spectacle that combined violence with beautiful bodies. This portrait of a famous boxer must have been commissioned by his aristocratic manager and promoter Wilson Braddyll, in anticipation of a well-publicized match. Illustration depicting female gymnasts: apparatus such as the bar, the ropes, or climbing frames which developed muscle were considered unsuitable for women. Instead female exercises were based on bending, stretching and swinging to encourage graceful carriage.
