A chief factor in the rise of skatings national popularity was the opening to skaters of Central Parks lake, which was reportedly first used by some three hundred people on a December Sunday in 1858. The number ballooned to a staggering ten thousand by the following Sunday. The view depicted here was described in Harpers Weekly: “The Ladies Pond is reserved for the fair sex, and no gentlemen are allowed to skate on it unless they are accompanied by ladies. It is kept in good order, and policemen on skates effectually repress all tendencies to rowdyism.. The scene.. usually draws a large concourse of visitors.” The strong reportorial nature of this image reflects Homers aim to satisfy the intense public curiosity about Central Park. American Art 18

Curling is a traditional Scottish winter sport which has a season that runs from October through to April. The game was founded in Scotland and for two thirds of the 19th century it was 'the' Scottish sport.Curlingis asportin which players slidestoneson a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into fourconcentriccircles. Boxing Match For 200 Guineas, Betwixt Dutch Sam and Medley, Fought 31 May 1810, on Moulsey Hurst Near Hampton June 5, 1810 Thomas Rowlandson Two boxers face each other on the turf, each accompanied by a second, with bottlemen seated at lower left and right. The ring is formed by densely packed male spectators with a few women shown standing at the back on the roofs of coaches. "Dutch Sam" was a Jewish pugilist from Holland who remained unbeaten until December 1814. This match took place on May 31, 1810, went 49 rounds, and lasted 52 minutes before Ben Medley was defeated. In the years that followed the French Revolution, British boxing and Spanish bullfighting rose to new prominence as demonstrations of individual skill and courage, replacing armored princely pageants.. Keith-Falconer, the best two amateur bicycle riders of the day, over a course of 25 miles at the Lillie-Bridge grounds, London, January 1875. Whiting won the race by 11 seconds, in a little over 1 hour and 41 minutes, to claim a 20 prize Silver Cup.
