Panel with the Entry into Jerusalem early 16th century French Until 1950 this panel lined the Great Hall of Highcliffe Castle in southern England. Constructed in the 1830s for Lord Stuart de Rothesay, the castle was furnished in part with stonework acquired form the ruined royal abbey at Jumièges in Normandy, where the panels might also have originated. In all likelihood they once decorated the backs of choir stalls ordered in 1501 by the abbot of Jumièges. Carved on The Cloisters' thirty-five oak panels (50.147.1-38) are scenes from the lives of the Virgin and Christ, each set under an elaborate canopy of single or double arches. The exuberant latticework surrounding the arches provides an almost encyclopedic display of pinnacles, crockets, spirals and other fanciful decorations. Heraldic Panel of Wilhelm von Weitingen 1518 German This panel, along with its pair, acc. no. 30.113.5, commemorate the marriage in 1518 of Barbara von Zimmern and Wilhelm von Weitingen, both of well-established Swabian families. These works represent the last expression of the Middle Rhenish style of the late 15th century, characterized by a strength and painterliness reminiscent of panel painting. The inscription on the banner above Barbara can be translated: "God have mercy"; that on the banner above Wilhelm reads: "Mother of God, have mercy on me, Wilhelm von Weitingen.". Stained Glass Panel with a Knight and His Patron Saint ca. 1505-08 German These four scenes are probably part of the glazing from the Cistercian church at Mariawald, located southwest of Cologne. Here, the Cologne glass painters adapted color to the traditional fondness for white glass, so that large areas of saturated color are combined with equally large sections of grisaille. Spring ca. 1873-85 Daniel Cottier The Aesthetic movement witnessed a revival of stained glass, primarily in the languid figural style associated with the English Pre-Raphaelites. The stained-glass artist Daniel Cottier was an important conduit for introducing this style to American audiences, and his New York studios, which opened in 1873, produced and marketed art furniture, upholstery, stained glass, and other decorative arts. In this allegory of Springfrom a series of the four seasonsa young woman stands barefoot with a newborn lamb in her arms. A gust of wind animates her light gown and flowing sash. The conventionalized yellow and gold leaves and the flowers in the small rectangular silver-stained panes surrounding the figure complement her gown’s floral decoration, which is reminiscent of William Morris textiles.. Grisaille Panel ca. 1265 French These grisaille panels are part of a set of eight from a window in one of three chapels at the Norman residence of the French monarchs. They represent a mid-century transitional stage in royal French ateliers. The conventionalized acanthus buds are a continuation of earlier tastes, while the ivy leaves, delineated with hair-thin veins, reflect the newer, naturalizing tendencies. The castles in the border are devices of the kingdom of Castile and indicate royal patronage, probably that of Louis IX (1226-1272), who claimed the right to the Spanish throne through his mother, Blanche of Castile.See 69.236.2-.9.. The Deluge 1531 Valentin Bousch French This window comes from a series of seven windows made for the choir of the Benedictine priory church of Saint-Firmin in Flavigny-sur-Moselle in the Lorraine region of France. The windows had been commissioned by the prior, Wary de Lucy (1510-1557) from Valentin Bousch, a glass painter in Metz who had already worked on a number of important projects including Metz cathedral. Bousch was occupied by the Flavigny-sur-Moselle project in the early 1530s. Three of the extant monumental windows from the series each bear a date (1531, 1532 and 1533). Bousch was one of the most significant master glaziers in north-eastern France in the sixteenth century and has long been recognized as an important participant in the stylistic and technical developments of the Northern Renaissance.
