This illustration dates to 1898 and shows a statue of Euterpe. Euterpe was honored as the Muse of music, song, and lyric poetry. In Greek and Roman mythology, the Muses were nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne (goddess of memory). There were honored as the patrons of arts and sciences. Calliope was the head muse, and Apollo, the god of prophecy and song, was their leader.

Zeno the Isaurian (425-491), originally known as Tarasis Kodisa Rousombladadiotes, was an Isaurian officer serving in the Eastern Roman army. He became an ally to Emperor Leo, marrying his daughter Ariadne and helping him assassinate the Alan general Aspar, who held much influence in Constantinople. He took the name Zeno, apparently from another famous Isaurian officer who had fought against Attila, to make himself more acceptable to Roman hierarchy. When Leo died in 474, Zeno's son Leo II became emperor, but as he was only seven at the time, he was convinced to name his father co-emperor. Zeno soon became sole emperor when his son died from an illness. Due to his barbarian origins, Zeno was not popular with the people and the Senate, despite his successes in foreign issues and stabilising the empire. Domestic revolts and religious dissension marked his reign, as well as the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Zeno died in 491 from either dysentery or epilepsy, with no sons to succeed hi

The figure pictured here, according to Greek mythology, is Eurus, or Euros, the god of the east wind. The folds of his clothes suggested heavy clouds. The others are: Lips, or Livos, the god of the southwest wind. Usually he was shown holding a ship's sternpost because when the wind blew form the southwest into Athens' port harbor of Piraeus, ships could not sail. Zephyrus was the god of the west wind. Zephyrus was the gentlest of the winds and considered a harbinger of springtime. He was pictured with flowers that indicated a mild light breeze. The Greeks honored eight wind gods. Apeliotes was the southeast wind, which was associated with good rain. Thus in art he was shown carrying fruit and draped in a cloth that concealed flowers or grain. The other four were Boreas (cold north wind), Kaikias (northeast wind), Notos (south wind), and Skiron (northwest wind).

The figure pictured here represents Chancellor Sir Thomas More in 1535. More was an English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman =, and noted Renaissance humanist. He was also an advisor to Henry VIII. After refusing to go with Henry on his wish to divorce Catherine of aragon, he was brought up on treason charges and executed. More wrote Utopia, a work of political fiction. The illustration dates to 1882.
