U-Boat 'Deutschland' - the first submarine to cross the Atlantic Ocean - pictured arriving in Baltimore with Civilian Captain Paul Konig in July 1916. A civilian captain was employed to prove that the vessel had no military intent - however, toward the end of WWI, the sub was renamed the SM-U-53 and saw active deployemnt against the allies. Ship Ablaze In Dock -- The "Zabalbide" blazing in the dock at Liverpool yesterday. Fire broke out on the Spanish steamer Zabalbide (3,038 tons) as she was entering dock at Garston, Liverpool yesterday afternoon. Her cargo of esparto grass caught a light and within a few minutes flames the crew being ashore at the time. October 31, 1935.
