Four Scenes from the Passion Follower of Bernard van Orley Netherlandish This panel was probably the centerpiece of a small triptych intended to assist its owner in the empathetic experience of Christ's Passion. Depicted in four delicately painted miniature scenes are the Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, Christ Bearing the Cross, the Crucifixion, and the Lamentation. In this densely ornamental work, elaborate fictive frames with statues of Old Testament prophets in Gothic niches surround the narrative episodes that are close in style to paintings by Bernard van Orley. The poses and gestures of the figures also reveal an acquaintance with Albrecht Dürer's Engraved Passion of 1507-12.. Four Scenes from the Passion. The Pérussis Altarpiece 1480 Circle of Nicolas Froment French The subject of this large altarpiece, the adoration of the empty cross on Golgatha, is unusual. According to a documented inscription on the lost original frame, the painting was made in 1480 for Aloisius Rudolphe de Pérussis, whose family coat of arms and motto are displayed on the side panels. One of the kneeling donors, presented by John the Baptist and Saint Francis, may be Aloisius himself. Originally from Florence, the Pérussis or Peruzzi took refuge in Avignon after they were exiled by Cosimo de' Medici in 1434. Julius Civilis Having his Hair Cut after the Fall of Vetera, while his Son Kills Some of the Captives. In 1613, the Dutch parliament (States General) commissioned Otto van Veen to paint twelve paintings depicting the revolt of the Batavians against the Romans in AD 69 and 70. These were displayed in Binnenhof, the central government building in The Hague. In the early years of the Dutch Republic, many compared their own revolt against Spain to the Batavian uprising.

The Martyrdom of Saint Barbara ca. 1510 Lucas Cranach the Elder German According to legend, Saint Barbara was executed by her pagan father, Dioscorus, when she refused to recant her Christian faith. Luxuriously dressed, she seems here to calmly accept her fate as she kneels before Dioscorus, who raises his sword to behead her. The four sinister-looking witnesses may be the Roman authorities who had tortured her in an attempt to persuade her to sacrifice to pagan gods, and who later sentenced her to death. The coat of arms indicates that Cranach painted this panel for a member of the Rem family, who were wealthy merchants in Augsburg.
