The Nuremberg Chronicle is an illustrated world history. Its structure follows the story of human history as related in the Bible; it includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. Written in Latin by Hartmann Schedel, with a version in German translation by Georg Alt, it appeared in 1493. It is one of the best-documented early printed books - an incunabulum (printed, not hand-written) - and one of the first to successfully integrate illustrations and text.

Helenus and Andromache Give Presents to Aeneas (Aeneid, Book III) ca. 1530-35 Master of the Aeneid European of the Renaissance period viewed ancient Rome not only as the origin of Italian civilzation but also the geographic center of a lost golden age. This plaque belongs to a series of at least eighty Limoges enamels illustrating events from Virgils Aeneid. The Latin epic poem tells the story of the legendary hero Aeneas, who escaped the sack and burning of Troy by the Greeks and, after wandering for some time, settled in Italy, where his descendants founded Rome.The scenes are not, however, the product of the enameler's imagination; rather, they are close copies of the woodcut illustrations for the edition of the Latin poets Opera printed by Johann Grüninger in Strasbourg in 1502. The same woodcuts were used again for the edition published in Lyon in 1517. The anonymous painter of the enamels may have used either the Strasbourg of the Lyon edition as his model, but the enamels are

Sky map titled Coeli Stellati Christiani Haemisphaerium Prius, First Hemisphere of the Christian Starry Sky created by Andreas Cellarius. The map comes from Cellarius's famous star atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica, which was first published by Johannes Janssonius in 1660. Sky map of the northern sky, known as Hemisphaerium Boreale or Northern Stellar Hemisphere, from the Harmonia Macrocosmica sky atlas by Andreas Cellarius. The atlas was originally published in 1660 and is considered one of the most beautiful works of Dutch cartography. The illustration shows the northern star vault with mythological figures and constellations, surrounded by allegorical representations, digitally restored reproduction from a 17th century model, authentic, exact date of depiction unknown

Probably born in Venice around 1254 CE, Marco Polo was raised by his aunt and uncle after his mother died. His father, Niccolo, was a Venetian merchant who left before Marco was born to trade in the Middle East. Niccolo and his brother Maffeo passed through much of Asia and met with Mongol emperor Kublai Khan who reportedly invited them to be ambassadors. In 1269, Niccolo and Maffeo returned to Venice, meeting Marco for the first time. In 1271, Marco Polo, aged 17, with his father and his uncle, set off for Asia, travelling through Constantinople, Baghdad, Persia, Kashgar, China and Burma. They returned to Venice 24 years and 15,000 miles later with many riches. Upon their return, Venice was at war with Genoa, and Marco Polo was imprisoned. He spent the few months of his imprisonment dictating his adventures to a fellow inmate, Rustichello da Pisa, who incorporated the tales into a book he called 'The Travels of Marco Polo'. Episode from the Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres (230 ft) long, which depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England, culminating in the Battle of Hastings, in 1066.
