Date: 1st half of the 5th century B.C..Roman overcast of a Greek bronze statue of the early 5th century B.C.In antiquity most large freestanding statues were made of bronze rather than marble. Hundreds honoring victorious athletes, poets, or generals stood in the great sanctuaries, as well as in civic centers. The majority of these works are lost-melted down at some point in order to reuse the metal. We know something of their appearance because the Romans admired many of the well-known statues and had them copied in marble, sometimes in bronze. This torso appears to be a bronze replica of a Greek bronze statue dating from the early fifth century B.C. During that period, sculptors were beginning to substitute a more relaxed naturalistic stance for the rigid pose that had been used for a hundred and fifty years to represent a youth. Bronze statuette of a reclining satyr. Culture: Etruscan. Dimensions: H. 1 15/16 in. (5 cm). Date: 6th century B.C..This delightful pair of satyrs, one playing the Pan pipes while reclining on a wineskin and the other holding a drinking horn, probably once decorated the rim of a large bronze vessel. These devotees of Dionysos, god of wine, are appropriate subjects on a vase used to serve that drink. Their style suggests a workshop in one of the major cities of Northern Etruria, perhaps Chiusi. Date: last quarter 19th-early 20th century.Rodin was fascinated by the expressive possibilities of hands: hands gesturing in anguish as in The Burghers of Calais, small studies of hands pulsing with life, giant enigmatic hands sufficient unto themselves. The poet Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), who was for a time Rodin's secretary, wrote: "There are among the works of Rodin's hands, single small hands, which without belonging to a body, are alive. Guardian Griffin (pair), 1150-1175. Northern Italy, Emilia, 12th century. Pink limestone (called "Verona Marble"); overall: 75.9 x 50.2 x 120.7 cm (29 7/8 x 19 3/4 x 47 1/2 in.). Griffins are fabled creatures that have the characteristics of an eagle and a lioncombining watchfulness and courage. In Christian art, the dual nature of the griffin was often used to signify that of Christ himself: divine (bird) and human (animal). Griffins were often used as guardian figures in church sculpture and were placed in portals and choir screens. The creatures seen here, with their inward-turning heads, were certainly used for such a purpose. When viewed from the front, one griffin may be seen clutching the figure of a knight between its paws, while the other griffin holds a calf. Their original function was probably to support the columns of a porch in front of a church doorway.

Hercules and the Hydra.Killing the Lernaean Hydra was the second of the twelve labours Hercules had to perform for King Eurystheus. Hercules is shown in the act of slaying the nine-headed monster. For every head he cut off, two new ones immediately sprouted from the wound. To prevent this from happening Hercules asked his friend Iolaus to scorch the neck stumps.

Date: late 18th-early 19th century.Jacques-Edmé Dumont was a highly accomplished Neoclassical miniaturist. His family, a dynasty of sculptors, preserved a great many of these captivating little terracottas (see 2015.378-.382a, b). Heh is a god associated with the primeval ocean, the supports of the sky, and - associated with concepts of extent - can serve as the hieroglyph for a "million". Dancer Adjusting the Shoulder Strap of Her Bodice modeled probably ca. 1896, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Except for the wax Little Fourteen-Year-Old Dancer (Washington: NGA) none of these sculptures had been publicly exhibited during the artists lifetime.Although Degas had not favored reproducing his sculptures in more permanent materials, his heirs authorized that copies be cast in bronze in order to preserve the compositions and to sell them as finished works. Torso of a Youth, c. 150-100 BC. Greece, 2nd Century BC. Marble; overall: 103 cm (40 9/16 in.). The exceptional workmanship suggests that this sculpture was carved by a Greek sculptor. Its incomplete state of preservation makes precise identification difficult, but it was most likely an Apollo or Dionysos, modeled in the soft, somewhat effeminate style of Praxiteles. The museums Apollo Sauroktonos is a useful parallel. The two drill holes in the upper chest are ancient and were possibly used to support separate long tresses of hair. The sculpture may well be a copy of a 4th-century original.

Carving from an Overmantel, c. 1675-1677. Grinling Gibbons (British, 1648-1721). Lindenwood; The arrangement of architectural elements within grand interior spaces in the late 1600s and early 1700s emphasized symmetry and height. Decorative elements such as elaborately carved mantels, mirrors, paintings, and applied wall decorations were often stacked to achieve a visual focal point at one or both ends of the room. This particular overmantel decoration once hung above the fireplace in the Green Drawing Room of the Earl of Essex at Cassiobury in Watford, near London. In 1823, the British painter William Henry Hunt (1790-1864) produced a watercolor of the drawing room which featured this overmantel decoration.Grinling Gibbons was born in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, of English parents. Head of a Grotesque ca. 1200-1220 French The comical effect of the muttonchop whiskers, bulbous nose, enormous eyes, and open mouth of this grotesque head demonstrates the extreme expressions found in marginal sculpture. The head resembles others on corbels supporting the roof cornice of one of the principal churches in Chlons-sur-Marne. The bold features, part of a visual language specific to medieval buildings, are meant to be seen from a distance.
