Lace was often utilized as neckwear in the 17th and 18th centuries for aesthetic purposes and to emphasize the fine quality the wearer could afford. This particular piece is finely detailed with mirror-image motifs which take no identifiable shape but are nevertheless intriguing. Armchair seat 1754-56 Beauvais This tapestry panel is part of a set of twelve armchairs and two settees ordered in Paris in 1753 by Baron Johann Ernst Bernstorff, Danish ambassador to the court of Versailles between 1744 and 1751. After returning to Denmark, Bernstorff commissioned this seat furniture for the tapestry room of his new residence in Copenhagen that was hung with four wall tapestries of the Amours des Dieux series woven at the Beauvais Manufactory. These exquisitely painted figures once appeared on the margins of a painting in an album made for the emperor Shah Jahan (the ruler who built the Taj Mahal). Illuminated borders were frequently used in royal albums, where they served to frame and protect a wide array of cherished paintings and calligraphies. The two seated men in this margin are either scribes or librarians: the man on the left with an open book in front of him is reciting to the man seated in the center. Stained Glass ca. 1881-82 John La Farge American This panel typifies the stained-glass technique developed by La Farge during the early 1880s. The original owner of the work, Royal Cortissoz, was the artist's principal biographer. It is not known how he obtained the window, but he presumably got it directly from La Farge. A watercolor study (Private Collection) reveals that this would have served as the central panel of a much larger window. Surrounding and holding up the Celtic Cross in the design is an elaborate tracery of vines derived from the kind of arabesque patterns found in Persian carpets or Islamic screens.. The story is from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, which enjoyed enormous popularity in the Middle Ages and beyond. This is one of a pair of marriage chests (cassoni) owned by the Museum.. Frieze with a Pattern of Interlaced Leaves 5th-7th century The monastic community of Bawit, founded in the 300s by Apa (Father) Apollo at a small village, grew to consist of numerous complexes with residences, chapels, and service structures and two large churches profusely decorated with sculptures and paintings, often reused from other sites, all affiliated with the Coptic church. The more important buildings were decorated with courses of sculpted stone freely combining floral and geometric motifs inspired by classical art - rosettes, acanthus leaves, meander patterns - with more recent Christian themes. These sculptural elements, demonstrating the Byzantine love of complex patterning with lush textures, were originally painted in rich, vibrant colors like those surviving in textiles.. Panel (part of a set) ca. 1510 Craftsmen supervised by Nicolas Castille The panels decorations, which include putti holding heraldic shields or strings of beads, floral scrolls, masks, and fabulous creatures, correspond to French adaptations of Italian motifs derived from prints and other sources. The portraits represent the donor, Georges dAmboise (1460-1510), in his cardinals hat and cloak and Louis XII (1462-1515; ruled 1498-1515) surrounded by a wreath topped by a porcupine, a symbol of the monarchs courage and ability to defend his kingdom. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.
