Qur'an Bookbinding Inset with Turquoise 16th century The stamped and gilded techniques used for this leather binding were common in the Middle East, especially in Iran where the art first developed, and in Turkey, where it was perfected. Central almond-shaped medallions and concave fillings in the four corners are common features of Islamic books. Ottoman book covers with this kind of composition and floral design served as models for a great number of Venetian Renaissance bookbindings and, more surprisingly, Venetian furniture as well.. Qur'an Manuscript dated A.H. 1268/A.D. 1851-52 Copied in a minute naskh script, the finely written calligraphy of this tiny Qur'an is rivaled only by its exuberant illumination. Both the form of the script and the palette of the illumination are characteristic of late Ottoman manuscript production. The script echoes the style developed by the earlier Turkish calligraphy master Shaikh Hamdullah (d. 1519). The photos concern the service time on Borneo in the period 1947-1950 and the return to the Netherlands 1953-1954. Album with batik cover and contains 30 sheets of orange cardboard.
