Arrival of a shooter piece at the shelters at Heemskerk.The largest shooters piece from Van der Helst, the Vendel of Captain Roelof Bicker and Lieutenant Jan Michielsz Blauw is transported. The work is carried in the bunker from a glass truck. The bomb-free cellars were built in 1940 after the shelters in North Holland villages were not safe. The collection components of the museum were evacuated in 1939. The new cellars were put into use in 1941.

The Ngeri-Ngeri Bridge on Dar es Salaam to Mikesse Line, destroyed by the Germans when their retired south from the Central Railway. See p. 53 of 'With the Nigerians in G. E. A.', (Downes). The centre span was blown up, and train after train then driven into the deep valley, so that one train lay on top of another till the pile of wreckage was flush with the old bridge level. A deviation was made here by the Indian Pioneers.

Nimitz announced the seizure of Ihiya Shima, 17th island of the Okinawa group to be taken, this week.

US Civil War. Siege of Charleston, 1863. Two Confederate soldiers, standing on the ruins of a chimney, in Fort Sumter, 1863. During the Union bombardment in August 1863, Confederate Gen. Beauregard replaced the fort's usual garrison with 320 infantrymen, who withstood the shelling and repulsed a Union landing party on the night of Sept. 8, 1863.
