"Semper Paratus" in Practice. Two hours and 300 miles later. Coast Guard emergency flood boats are "flipped" into the Ohio at Louisville, Kentucky ready for use. These rugged, 13-foot, emergency boats, built of Marine plywood, were loaded aboard a Coast Guard Curtis commando (C-46) at St. Louis, Missouri and "flown" to Louisville, Kentucky in a practical demonstration of how the Coast Guard's flood preparation program works. The demonstration proved that any flood area within 320 miles of St. Louis can, within two hours, be supplied with boats, radio equipment, and rescue personnel. This boat is being "dumped" into the water from a Truck at the Louisville, Kentucky life boat station - the Coast Guard's only floating lifeboat station on the rivers. As one Coast Guardsman station succinctly "In case of flood we don't use trucks - we just hit the water." Semper Paratus - Always Ready.

"May 1918 - The first steel ship built south of Newport, named "Mexoil," is seen here shortly after its launch. Constructed by the Alabama-New Orleans Transportation Company for the Mexican Petroleum Corporation, this 3,000-ton vessel is a significant achievement for the region's shipbuilding industry. The successful launch demonstrates the potential for constructing even larger ships in the narrow canal with limited lock capacity."

Northwest Passage. The black hull of the U.S. Coast Guard buoy tender Spar stands out in sharp contrast to the white Arctic ice compressed around her during the tense hours she was beset in ice in Amundsen Gulf. She waited patiently for a break to proceed onward to Dolphin and Union Straits (July 31 to August 3). Beset with the Spar were her two companion Coast Guard Ships, the Storis and Bramble. While making the Northwest Passage run the three ships were faced with the worst Arctic ice and weather conditions recorded in many years. The 180-ft. Spart with the Storis and Bramble made history when they completed the first deep-draft transit of 17-mile Bellot Strait from west to east on September 6, 1957. Added to this feat was another for the Spar. When she returned to her homeport at Bristol, Rhode Island on September 24th, the Spar became the first American ship to circumnavigate the North American content in one season. The Spar was commanded by Lieutenant C.V. Cowing, USCG.

USCGC Northwind Exploring the East Siberian Sea. Far from her Seattle homeport, the 269-ft. U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind is seen here moored to hummocked ice in the East Siberian Sea during her extensive 1963 oceanographic exploration. Marine tests were taken from the icebreaker at fifty-three stations in the Siberian Sea, and others in the likewise remote Chukchi and Laptev seas which adjoin the U.S.S.R.'s North Siberian coast. Information was gathered on currents, water water composition, marine plants and animal life, and bottom composition.
