Costume of Coutances. While the woman in Plate 25 wore an everyday bonnet, this woman is wearing a demi-pare bonnet - the bavolet was for the finest occasions. Note that the top is flattened and the papillon (butterfly) wings are horizontal. Hand-colored fashion plate illustration by Lante engraved by Gatine from Louis-Marie Lante's "Costumes des femmes du Pays de Caux," 1827/1885. With their tall Alsation lace hats, the women of Caux and Normandy were famous for the elegance and style.

Her thin gauze slip reveals her beautiful legs. Handcoloured etching by Auguste Etienne Guillaumot Jr. from "Costumes of the Directory," Rouquette, Paris, 1875. The etchings were made from designs by Eugene Lacoste and Draner after prints of the era 1795-99. The costumes are from theatre productions "Merveilleuses" and "Pres Saint-Gervais" by Victorien Sardou.

Turkish woman and the Galata Tower. Picture from a set of cards issued to reflect the fact that soon after Ataturk took over in Turkey in the 1920s, there was liberation by women from the old modes of dress. Instead of impenetrable veils, they wore lighter, thinner veils. It was a move to modernisation and more Western thought away from heavy Orientalism.     Date: 1920s
