. This evening dress was designed by the Italian Maria Nina´ Ricci, who founded her own fashion house in Paris in 1932. The gown consists of an underskirt and a tunic. The draped silhouette recalls the clothing worn by women in ancient Greece, on which many 1930s evening dresses were modelled. The abstract floral pattern lent the design a contemporary character.

Banyan. Culture: Chinese. Date: 1760-70.From the sixteenth century, British gentlemen wore loose, informal gowns in the privacy of the home as a comfortable alternative to the stiff and physically restrictive modes of dress required for public settings. Trade through the European East India companies led to new styles of gowns, which were often made of imported materials and variously called nightgowns, morning gowns, India gowns, or banyans. This banyan, composed of a Chinese export silk and quilted for warmth, represents a more fitted style that developed in the mideighteenth century. Fitted banyans reflected a hybrid of Persian, Turkish, and Indian influences but followed the silhouette of contemporary European coats, making them well suited to wearing informally in town or when receiving guests at home. An essential garment for fashionable men, this elegant but functional form of "undress" suggested an urbane, worldly masculinity. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Promenade dress. Culture: French. Designer: Mme. Blanchard (French). Date: 1882.Like the late-eighteenth-century promenade dresses à la polonaise, which hovered at the ankle and ballooned at sides and back, the style of the 1880s was to create volumes of form around the body while freeing the ankle and foot. The 1880s style was influenced by the new sports clothing of the time, especially walking and croquet dresses. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Dressing jacket 1725-50 British A combing jacket would have been worn by a fashionable lady at her toilette. Although there are no obvious means of fastening the jacket, pinholes at the neck suggest it was held closed by a brooch. The considerable width at the hem seems to confirm a date of the 1740s, when wide skirts were supported by side panniers. Although there are illustrations of women wearing informal jackets and some extant examples, these are usually more fitted, either at the sleeve or the back. The construction of the combing jacket, however, is closer to the kimono style cut seen in men's dressing gowns of the same period.The Costume Institute already has a number of white-work pieces, including a very fine cord-quilted linen bodice and two similar skirts, but to find a combing jacket is unusual. The cord quilting of the body and sleeves requires a high degree of skill. Moreover, the white-work embroidery on the facings, hem, and turned-back cuffs is of special significance

Compared to more common examples, the work is more refined and delicate and the motifs are less static, with a sense of movement. Dress 1888 House of Worth French The bustle silhouette, although primarily associated with the second half of the 19th century, originated in earlier fashions as a simple bump at the back of the dress, such as with late 17th-early 18th century mantuas and late 18th- early 19th century Empire dresses. The full-blown bustle silhouette had its first Victorian appearance in the late 1860s, which started as fullness in skirts moving to the back of the dress. This fullness was drawn up in ties for walking that created a fashionable puff. This trendsetting puff expanded and was then built up with supports from a variety of different things such as horsehair, metal hoops and down. Styles of this period were often taken from historical inspiration and covered in various types of trim and lace. Accessories were petite and allowed for the focus on the large elaborate gowns. Around 1874, the style altered and the skirts began to hug the thighs in the front while the bustle at the back was reduced

Bathing suit 1870s American The 1860s and 1870s saw the revival of a number of historical periods in dress. Classical references were apparent in the appearance of laurel swags, wave meanders, and Greek-key bands on such categories of apparel as children's dresses, men's smoking ensembles, and dressing gowns, and on all forms of womenswear and accessories. In the bathing costume shown here, the connection to the natural and healthful life of "sport" associated with the ancient Greeks is especially apt. Of course, the wool cloth, heavy and hardly buoyant when wet, was not appropriate for vigorous water sports. Rather it was meant for what was considered the more feminine activity of "bathing," a simple immersion that allowed for some bobbing or a few strokes without any real possibility of sustained swimming..
