Shoes 1690-1710 European Shoes dating from before the mid 18th century are scarce, especially in American museums, where they were usually purchased for the collection or given by collectors, rather than surviving in the ancestral wardrobes of museum donors. Despite its poor condition, this pair of embroidered latchet tie shoes is a worthy item for the Brooklyn collection, providing an excellent example of the domed sole and exaggerated toe which typified high style ladies' shoes of the era. The embroidered floral design, pleasingly rendered in complementary versions on the vamp and the heel, is typical of Stuart period embroidery. The white leather rand (strip along the front of the sole), lining, and heel stitching demonstrate the quality construction and add an appealing element of contrast.. Shoes. Pair of Evening Shoes.For evening events women wore slingback-style shoes. They were often covered with fabric rather than leather. This pair of shoes completed an ensemble consisting of a cocktail dress with a tie belt and a large folding fan. The delicate straps once tore out at the instep. Because textile is easier to sew back together than leather, only the upper layer, made of silk fabric, was repaired.

The looping design of topstitching on the button fly is seen on many examples from the period and is both a decorative enhancement and a functional reinforcement of the buttonholes. The scalloped top is a feature limited mainly to childrenswear, where short skirts would allow such a detail to be seen, and which would mirror the decorative bottom edge of the pantaloons. Boots. Culture: American. Date: 1855-65.For the feminine foot, the ankle boot was the dominant outdoor footwear from the 1830s to the 1870s, a convention which continued to the 1920s for winter wear. This pair of boots - with the low straight top, side lacing, and squarish toe - is typical of about 1860. The side lacing was standard from the 1830s until gradually being replaced by front lacing in the 1860s. Evening shoes. Culture: French. Date: 1875-85.The ankle-strap or ankle-tie shoe, as illustrated by this pair of evening shoes, was worn primarily in the late 1870s and 1880s. Slippers with comparatively high backs were a trend from the 1870s, and it seems that the feature of the peaked or raised quarter may have led naturally to the ankle-tie style. Although novel and fashionable at the time, the style does not appear to have been very widely worn. Satin boots were widely worn for evening in the 1860s and early 1870s, and this hybrid style can be seen as a compromise between the boot and the slipper. Shoes 1690-1700 French The French Court championed excessively ornamented clothing and accessories, perhaps as a manifestation of the romantically exuberant decorative arts, or as a reflection of the gross superficiality of social custom. In the same fashion that the formal women's robe à la francaise was designed to showcase the luxurious embroideries and silk damask fabrics of the century, so too did the impossibly tight breeches, skirted waistcoats, and shapely shoes of menswear provide an adequate canvas for the period's woven artistry. Men's adornment was every bit imbued with the elegance, tactile variance, and ostentation that marked women's clothing of the era. The fashionable eighteenth-century man was expected to convey a certain grace, and was required to enjoy the fine arts, music, and dancing. Boots 1865-75 probably American Utilitarian shoes were often worn out and discarded, so it is fortunate to find a good quality specimen in fine condition. This pair of walking boots is serviceable but not particularly fashionable. The side lacing had been predominant for thirty years, but was going out of style in the 1860s to front lacing. Cloth uppers were also standard on earlier ladies' boots; all-leather uppers did not become common until the 1860s.. Boots 156193

Evening boots 1860-69 French In an effort to protect their modesty and sense of decorum, proper ladies of the mid-19th century wore ankle boots when venturing out in public, even for evening events. This typical pair of 1860s boots for evening or carriage wear displays especially refined curved lines at the ankle and top edge. The large rosette adds texture and interest to the otherwise undecorated surface. The front lace was predominant in the 1860s, but was superseded by button closures in the 1870s.. Shoes. Culture: British. Date: late 18th century.Quotidian fashions, even if they were intended for the upper classes, rarely survive. With the exception of formal court attire, this is especially true of menswear, as the combination of the persistence of male styles compared to women's fashions and the relatively heavier functional requirements of male dress resulted in its loss through wear and a disinterest in its preservation for aesthetic reasons. These shoes, however, were spared the typical fate because of their association with a person of note-the famed poet, hymnist, and letter writer William Cowper (1731-1800). Unlike the other examples of sartorial mastery in the exhibition, these shoes are significant precisely because they are so ordinary in their look and make and are so typical of their time-and because they survived. They are likely to have been worn with articles of a gentlemen's "undress," a banyan or robe and a soft cap, attire in which Cowper was depicted. Museum:

Date: 1865-75.The prevailing fashion for long skirts in the 19th century and the general importance of feminine propriety encouraged rather limited decoration of contemporary ladies' footwear. While ornate bows and embroidered vamps are relatively common on evening shoes, heavy soled walking shoes , like this pair of button boots, were seldom ornamented with anything more than a simple bow or buckle. By consequence, the presence here of an elaborate machine-embroidered design covering the entire upper is of particular interest. The beaded cordwork was applied over the embroidery, presumably by the wearer, to increase the decorative program even further, perhaps for a special event for which it was not possible to purchase shoes specifically .
