A collection of early 16th-century woodcuts depicting dramatic historical and religious scenes, featuring traditional costumes, figures in action, and intricate details.

Jean Chatel gained access to King Henri IV's private chamber and attacked him with a knife. He was arrested immediately and executed for his crime. He was said to have been inspired by the Jesuits so they were consequently expelled from France.     Date: 1594

Lading Arms and wine from Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered cloth nearly 230 feet long and 20 inches tall that depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England between William, Duke of Normandy and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England. At the Battle of Hastings in 1066, William defeated Harold. It tells the story from the point of view of the conquering Normans, but is now agreed to have been made in England. Worked on coarse linen, it measures 230 feet by 20 inches. Its date is disputed. It is housed in the Bayeux Museum in Bayeux, France. Shown here in this illustration
