KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - On Launch Pad 39B, workers demate the fittings between the Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP) and the pad to allow the MLP with Space Shuttle Discovery to return to the Vehicle Assembly Building. The fittings provide ground electrical power and connections for vehicle data and communications. Once inside the VAB, Discovery will be demated from its External Tank and lifted into the transfer aisle. On or about June 7, Discovery will be lifted and attached to its new tank and Solid Rocket Boosters, which are already in the VAB. Only the 15th rollback in Space Shuttle Program history, the 4.2-mile journey allows additional modifications to be made to the External Tank prior to a safe Return to Flight. Discovery is expected to be rolled back to the launch pad in mid-June for Return to Flight mission STS-114. The launch window extends from July 13 to July 31.

Technicians from Orion Prime Contractor Lockheed Martin weld the forward bulkhead of the pressure vessel to the tunnel hardware on the Orion Spacecraft for the Artemis III mission at NASAs Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans. The crew modules primary structure, the pressure vessel, is comprised of seven machined aluminum alloy pieces that are welded together through a weld process that produces a strong, air-tight habitable space for astronauts during the mission. The pressure vessel is designed to withstand the harsh and demanding environment of deep space and is the core structure upon which all the other elements of Orions crew module are integrated. This pressure vessel weld is the next step following the completion of the crew module cone panel welds and creates the top of the spacecraft. Work will then begin to join the barrel with the aft bulkhead to form the bottom of Orion. Last, the forward bulkhead will be welded to the top of the panels and, for the seventh and clo

Phillip Pitcher, a telecommunications engineer in the Performance Assessment Department of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona Division, installs a control console of a Ku Band satellite communications system aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) in Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, June 27, 2022. The system was developed by the warfare center to allow for real-time streaming of missile telemetry data and was installed on the Fitzgerald in preparation for the Pacific Dragon exercise. Five nations are participating in PACDRAGON 2022 in and around the Hawaiian Islands in August. This international maritime exercise provides a unique training opportunity to detect, track, and defend against ballistic missiles while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants critical to ensuring safety and security on the worlds oceans. PACDRAGON 2022 is the third exercise in the series that began in 2018.

U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Michael Ramirez, 776th Expeditionary Air Base Squadron radar, airfield, and weather systems technician, poses for a photo next to open panels on the air traffic control tower at Chabelley Airfield, Djibouti, Sept. 1, 2022. In less than 24 hours from the outage notification, Ramirez engineered a zero-cost solution that gave ATC the full capability to record all phone calls in and out of the tower to be in full compliance with Air Force regulations. Lt. Col. Anders Hedberg, 776th EABS commander, said, Without SrA Ramirezs ingenuity, this outage would have taken several months to resolve due to component research and acquisition times.
