This illustration dates to the early 1900s. The caption reads: Fulvia with the head of Cicero. Fulvia was the wife of Mark Antony in his early days. After Caesars death. Antony sought to grasp absolute power, and Fulvia lent him able assistance. His chief opponent was the orator Cicero, who poured savage reproof and ridicule upon Antony and his evil wife. At length Antony got the upper hand and had Cicero slain. The head of the orator was sent as a most acceptable present to Fulvia, and she taunted it and stuck pins through the dead tongue, crying that here was a sharper answer to all his sha

Henry IV (10501106) succeeded his father Henry III of Germany in A.D. 1056. As he was a minor, two archbishops ruled as regents. In 1056, he began his personal rule. His appointment of bishops in 1075 resulted in his excommunication. He later received absolution but was excommunicated again in 1080. This time, Henry IV gathered troops, drove Gregory from Rome in 1084 and was crowned emperor. He was forced to abdicate by his son in 1105. This illustration, based on a painting by Von Arnim, shows Henry on his deathbed at Liege (in prresent-day Belgium), August 7, 1106.
