This color lithograph, one of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrecs most abstract and innovative, depicts the American dancer Loïe Fuller onstage at the Folies-Bergère in Montmartre. Fuller was famous for a mesmerizing dance in which she twirled her voluminous dress amid shifting multicolored lights, surrounded by mirrors. One observer described Fuller as a “marvelous dream-creature you see dancing madly in a vision swirling among her dappled veils, which change ten thousand times a minute.” Although Toulouse-Lautrec used the same five lithography stones for some sixty impressions, each image is unique. The artist created atmospheric effects of different color combinations and patterns by spattering ink onto the lithographic stones surface—a technique called crachis (spit). Date: 1899.Beautiful and stylish, Serena Pulitzer Lederer was a star of turn-of-the-century Viennese society. For this portrait, commissioned by her husband, the industrialist August Lederer, Klimt employed soft, sinuous brushstrokes to present Serena as an apparition in white. "An upright flower, long-stemmed ... like a black tulip," enthused one critic when the painting was shown in 1901 at the tenth exhibition of the Vienna Secession--a group founded by Klimt and other artists four years earlier, with the aim of putting the city at the forefront of the international art world. Stained Glass Window ca. 1905 William Lightfoot Price This window is one of a larger series designed by Philadelphia architect William Price. Price and M. Hawley McLanahan co-founded the utopian Arts and Crafts community called Rose Valley in 1901, and Price is perhaps best known for his work there. Here, the narrative hunting scene draws upon medieval sources and is reminiscent of English book illustration from the turn of the century. Also significant is the use of variable widths of leading and the subtle arrangement of clear and textured glass punctuated with small colored glass "jewels". These windows were designed for the Van Camp house in Indianapolis, Indiana, where they remained until the house was destroyed in the mid-1960s.. Stained Glass Window 14808

The Black Cat, for Edgar Allan Poes “Tales of Mystery and the Imagination,” Chicago, 1895-96 1894 Aubrey Vincent Beardsley Responding to Poe's "The Black Cat," Beardsley shows the ferocious one-eyed feline that the narrator mistakenly walled up with the corpse of his wife. Revealed when the wall is broken through, the furious animal sits on the dead womans upright head, which the artist represents with masterful economy, using black lines against a white ground. In contrast, the background wall and cat are almost completely black, apart from a circular patch of white fur on the chest. This is one of four drawings that Beardsley made to illustrate a new American edition of Poe's "Tales of Mystery and the Imagination." The commission came from the Chicago publisher Stone and Kimball in December 1893 and the artist wrote in response that he believed the material offered "an admirable chance of picture making."
